I have 2 new dells. XP Home can see the XP pro, but XP pro cannot see the
other. They are both on the same workgroup with unique names. There is some
premission issues and I believe I need to set permissions by disabling simple
file sharing- Right?

I have a direct cable conenction via a crossover cable. Both NiC cards seem
to be working ok and both show the 10/100mbs ballon when started.

What am i missing and what are the trouble spots I seem to have run into.

Ryan,

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, so we can see where to
start diagnosing the problem.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

See my answer to your earlier post. Please keep questions about one
subject in one thread. Please wait at least 24 hours before making a
new thread about the same question. People who help in these groups
live all over the world and you have to give us time to see the
questions. Now look for your previous post and keep additional posts
about this question in *that* thread.

That wouldn't help, because:

1. Enabling or disabling simple file sharing has no effect on whether
computers can see each other.

2. Permissions have no effect on whether computers can see each other.
Permissions (which are only available on XP Pro) determine whether a
user can access shared disks and folders that are already visible
through network browsing.

3. Disabling simple file sharing on XP Pro would have no effect on
accessing XP Home. It would give you more control over how XP Home
accesses XP Pro, letting you specify which users can access which
shares. Ron Lowe and I have written a web page with details:

The most likely problem is that a firewall on XP Home is blocking
access from XP Pro. Can XP Pro ping XP Home by IP address? If not, a
firewall is almost certainly the problem.
