Hi,
I have XP home with tons of software installed. I am thinking of
upgraidnt to XP pro. My question is.. will the programs/software work
semelessly after the upgrade? if not.. I will stick with the older OS.

THanks

You should be just fine but of course you should backup your data first. The
question to ask (yourself, not me) and to answer too I suppose (again, you -
not me) is why upgrade? Do you NEED to?

I see that you want to upgrade that's fine for what ever reason you want to
is fine. Yes all the programs will be there and work out fine for you ok.
Thanks

Reply back and let me know how it goes. Don't forget to select yes if this
was helpful on my post. I always like helping out people with there problems.
Thanks

Upgrading from Home to Pro is perhaps the simplest operating system
upgrade ever, because all it is really doing is adding those
components and functions which are not found in XP Home but which are
included with XP Pro.

The converse of this is that unless you have some current or
anticipated future need for at least one of those components or
functions which are part of Pro and not included with Home then there
is no benefit to be had from doing the upgrade. In particular there
is zero difference in performance or reliability between the two
versions and they are both produced from the same source code base.

You need to make sure that the upgrade CD you use is at the same
Service Pack level (or higher) than the installed Windows. If your
installed XP Home is at the Service Pack 2 level and you try to
upgrade to XP Pro using an upgrade version that is Original Release or
Service Pack 1 then you will have problems.

And before starting the upgrade you should do some preliminary work as
described in MVP Gary Woodruff's article on upgrading to XP:

Good luck

Well the Only reason I seem to be doing it is b/c my current version of
XP Home doest allow me to access my COM port at all. Also the NTP/RPC
mechanism is broken and I havent found any way to sync my comp clock.
Dell asked me to reinstall windows.. but I dont want to let go of all
the installed software, and more importantly the many setting that I
have made for development purposes.

Do you think it would help me with the above problems. if I did upgrade
to Professional?

Well it might but you can use your restore disk or you can make one
(depending on how old your PC is) and do a repair installation.

As Galen points out, doing a Repair Install may resolve these problems.
Installation of XP Pro isn't the best way to go about this!

If a Repair Install doesn't resolve these issues, let us know what you did
and what the result was and one of us can help walk you thru troubleshooting
your problems.
