Upon start up a black screen comes up and says I have to put in the system
disk. After that it runs fine. I have restarted the machine during that
session and it doesn't ask for the disk again but if I turn it off and start
it up the next day it does ask for it again. Also when I go to a folder or
even a website and try to select just one thing all the items before that one
thing are selected also and it won't let me unselect them. I use a wireless
keyboard and mouse.

It looks as if XP requires access to the XP CD because it needs to load a
driver for some device for some reason. For example you might have the
hibernate setting enabled, which saves the data for the whole system so that
it can boot up from where it left off. However, you might have been using an
external modem and you switched it off. XP would have unloaded the driver.
Then the PC would go into hibernation without the modem driver copied, so
when Xp comes out of hibernation it has to find the modem driver on the CD.

I'm not saying that is your problem, but it could be something similar. When
the CD is accessed is there a message that says which hardware has been
found? If there is then you know which device is the cause of the problem.

If there is no indictaion as to what XP is doing, I would try opening System
Restore under All Programs => Accessories => System Tools and restoring a
restore point that pre-dates the problem.
