I just got a new laptop that included XP Home Edition and I cannot upgrade
to Pro because a desired app won't work. Anyway, I've installed all updates
and many apps without any problems. Then, I tried to install Visual Studio
6 and get this:

setup has encountered a problem and needs to close...

The error report contains:

AppName: vs60wiz.exe
AppVer: 6.0.0.8167
ModName: vs60wiz.exe
ModVer: 6.0.0.8167
offset: 000087f1

Has anyone else seen this? Is there a fix?

Thanks...

David,

apart from the solution already provided by Tim, I don't know of
any programs that run only on Windows XP Home, but not equally
well on Windows XP Professional. Are you sure that your desired
app would not run on XP Pro?

Thanks for the quick response.

Tried safe mode... no help.

Tried command line and I got a message that the setup wizard has to be run
first.

Tried logging (/gc) and I don't get anything in the log

The article describes a problem after the prompt to enter the CD key. When
just running setup, I don't even get to the CD key prompt. When I tried the
command line in the PRB, I was prompted for the CD key and then I get the
wizard message. I don't think that article is describing the fix for my
problem.

Thanks, it was worth a try...
