I've read about the Pro features on the MS Site at

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/evaluation/features.asp

Does this mean that Features such as "New Windows Engine" and
"Side-by-side DLL support" and "Preemptive multitasking architecture"
are not included in Home edition? Those would seem like necessary
features.

I'm running Win2000 on my desktop; Many of the Laptops I'm looking at
come with XP Home edition and I'm not sure I want to give up those
features I already have on Win2000.

Thanks for any insights.

I have read that if you are not running a company, especially with a
network of computers, then you are wasting your $$ going for Pro vs
Home. I have read they are basically the same operating system.

Side by Side and preemptive multitasking are in Home too:

Thanks, Sharon - those pages aren't easily found from the main site :)

You're welcome! And you're right -- I had to dig around for several
minutes to find them. :)

No, it doesn't mean that. Those features are in both versions.

XP Professional and XP Home are exactly the same in all respects,
except that Professional has a few features (mostly related to
networking and security) missing from Home. For most (but not
all) home users, these features aren't needed, would never be
used, and buying Professional instead of Home is a waste of
money.

For details go to

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/whichxp.asp

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home/howtobuy/choosing2.asp

Also note that Professional allows ten concurrent network
connections, and Home only five.

Pretty well all of that page applies equally to Home. The differences
are set out clearly at
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_home_pro.asp
for the list of things that are in Pro only. In addition Pro will
support ten simultaneous connections in a network - Home only five

Aside from these items - which can be seen as bolt on extras, the two
versions are *identical*. Indeed in the MSDN distribution I used to
install this system, most of the files were in the same folder, with
just a few extras accessible only from the Pro setup
