Problem began yesterday, ate supper came back upstairs and PC would not
awaken from standby. It has done this sporadically and I always have to press
restart. This time it hangs after the Windows Startup screen with the
traveling blue bar, after completing that, just as it looks like it is about
to start I get nothing but a black screen.

Can not start in last known good config, safe mode hangs on a first screen
of a list of sys files. Just went into recovery console and used fixboot,
still hangs on a black screen.

I do not have the option of doing a repair install when I boot from the CD,
I only have a DOS type environment when I boot from the CD. I cannot boot so
I cannot enter Windows GUI setup by inserting the CD after starting the
computer.

I am tempted to reinstall the OS on top of existing OS, (no my documents has
not been backed up recently) dialog says "All files, subfolders, user
accounts, applications, security and desktop settings for that windows
installation will be deleted. The my documents folder may also be deleted.

To use the folder and delete the existing windows installation in it, press L

To use a different folder press escape

If I attempt to install I get:

To setup enter
To create a partition C
To delete partition D

C:/partition1 (NTFS) 29,314 MB (21,601 free)

If I hit enter I get:

You chose to install XP on a partition that contains another OS. Installing
XP on this partition might cause the other OS to function improperly.

CAUTION: Installing multiple OS on a single partition is not recommended.

What should I do?

Some background, cable modem, running spy sweeper, virus protection from
Trend Micro, Zone Alarm free version. Three days ago I came home to find like
100 Zone Alarm error messages, couldn't restart without Zone Alarm erroring
out so I uninstalled it. I believe I am up to date on Microsoft Security
updates.
