XP home network problems

2 computers running XP Pro SP2, connected via 802.11b USB adapter on
"Boxer4" and hard-wired LAN on "Boxer3". Netgear 5port switch connects
Boxer3 to Linksys WAP.

Simple sharing disabled on both machines. User IDs and passwords match but
one of the user IDs "KIDS" on both machines lacks a password. That user ID
is set to auto-login on Boxer4.

Workgroup set up as "BOXERNET". No domains involved, at least not
intentionally configured.

Appearance of shared resources on "My Network Places" is intermittent. When
they display, could log in from Boxer 3 to Boxer 4 with password-protected
user IDs but not with 'KIDS'.

Originally couldn't see shared resources at all, resolved with reset of
winsock following instructions on www.michna.com.

When workgroup computers are displayed but can't log in, frequently get
access denied errors.

Reviewed events on Boxer4 and found a recurring error which may be relevant:
"The master browser has received a server announcement from teh computer
BOXER3 that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on
transport NetBT_Tcpip{... The master browser is stopping or an election is
being forced."

Ping boxer4 from boxer3 works. Ping boxer3 from boxer4 does not. DHCP server
is Westell 2100 DSL modem. Statistics on modem show ip addresses of both.
Pinging ip address of boxer3 from boxer4 does not work.

Help. Pulling hair out.

Apparently your computers are having a fight over who is master browser.
It's a bit unusual that this would happen with only two computers, but
try turning off the Computer Browser service on the machine with the
wireless connection. Go to Start>Run and type services.msc [enter].
Scroll down to the Computer Browser service and double-click it to get
its Properties. Stop the service and change to Disabled. See if that
solves the issue.
