I have had trouble with windows loading after installing updates even SP2,
and have to use system restore to go back before the updates. Any ideas
please. Also. Is it possible to create a 'floppy' boot disk for XP?

Regarding your second question.. Yes. Get a floppy disk and on WIndows
Explorer, right click on the Floppy Drive and left-click on the Format
Option. On the Format window, put a check mark on Create Startup Disk (or
something) and that's it.

Although you can certainly create a boot diskette from within Windows, as
you say, it's important to note that you can't get into Windows using it.

Also, if your drive is NTFS, note that you won't be able to see it from a
DOS diskette boot--at least not without special software on the diskette--so
it isn't generally useful.

You haven't provided much information. Saying " I have had trouble"
doesn't give much to those here who want to help. See this link for how
