anyone got any ideas re: how to STOP xp home from reinstalling hardware that
I've both physically removed from the computer AND disabled?

By 'removing' do you mean uninstalled any software associated with the
hardware AND uninstalled in Device Manager prior to shutting down the PC and
physically removing the hardware (ie. PCI card). OR Do you do you mean
'removing' by simply shutting down the PC and physically removing the
hardware (ie. PCI card).

You may wish to clarify 'what' hardware specifically, how is connected, etc.

r.

network card - well, 2 actually .... was 1 in (Realtek) causing problems, so
attempted to replace it with another (3M) ..... in hardware systems,
uninstalled the card, and TRIED to also uninstall the other two listings,
both of which were giving me grief (yellow ! symbol) - packet scheduler and
1 other - 2 sets of those remain, 1 for each card (that now physically is
NOT THERE).

error msg; not allowed to uninstall, update driver, or anything else BUT
disable "as it may be required to boot the system"

On reboot, it ~finds new hardware~ and reinstalls everything, again with
errors (and no connection to the Internet) - in spite of the fact there is
now NO NETWORK CARD in the system.

have cleaned spyware, adaware and viruses; also been through BIOS,
sys.config etc looking for anything that might be telling it it needs an
adapter to boot (or that one exists when it doesn't) but can't find anything
:(

did a diagnostic boot and only thing that changed - other than that it did
not for once reinstall both cards that aren't there - is that now it's
telling me xp needs to be reactivated due to signifigant hardware changes
*sigh*

if it were mine, I'd just reformat and reinstall at this point.

In Device Manager, select "show hidden devices" then delete
all the problematic devices and reboot.

nope.... that just shows a bunch more stuff that I'm not allowed to delete
because "it may be required to boot the computer"

obviously it's not, since it still boots and it is NOT THERE

I love computers!

reinstalling the OS worked to fix it.... everything's playing nicely again

TONS of spyware and adaware and trojans found - imagine one or more of them
were the cause of the problem..
