A friend's local office recently upgraded their computers
and he bought the old server (2000Pro and Office 2000) and
brought it home. With the office upgrades came XP Pro and
Office XP.

His family did not like the 2000Pro interface, so they
went and installed XP Home Edition over the top (of course
it now multiboots, and no, they did not ask me first!;)

Apparently the old software licenses (and the disks)
resided in the corporate offices, so are not accessable
(old IT personnel sacked and/or uncooperative) and may
have been trashed.

Now my friends would like me to get the old Office 2000
working in the XP boot, and get rid of the multiboot.
A. Can I just copy over the files to the XP partition,
then drag the 2000 registry for all the office references,
or...
B. Do they have registry entries that are TOO different,
and I will HAVE to obtain a copy of the Office 2000 CD's
and license?
Any ideas will be appreciated

You'll need to perform a "clean install" of XP Home. You cannot
install XP Home over Windows 2000 without causing major problems.
Also, if you did not receive the Office 2000 installation CDs and
Product Keys, you cannot use Office 2000 since you have no valid
license to do so.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.
