I have an IMB ThinkPad running W95. Is it possible to upgrade (preferable
directly) to XP Home Ed? If so how?

You can't upgrade from 95 to XP, you can only Clean install. You can use the
XP upgrade to do the clean install as long as you have the original 95 CD or
floppies as qualifying media.
Even laptops that shipped with 98/Me or 2000 are not the best hardware to
upgrade to XP. Laptops have proprietary hardware and software that is not
usually included on an XP CD. You will usually lose some functionality when
upgrading a laptop to a completely different OS [as XP is to 95]. Always
consult the manufacturer of the laptop for upgrading recommendations.
Most laptops that shipped with 95 would have limitations on memory that
would probably be at or below the minimum for running XP, plus the hard
drives shipped with 95 were around 1 to 2 gigs with 5 gigs being a real
rarity. Unless your laptop with 95 was an anomaly for it's time, the answer
is don't even try.

I have an ancient Compaq 'laptop' here (it weighs about 5kgs) - 1GB hard
drive, 16MB RAM (and a quarter of that is allocated to the graphics chip)
running 95a. Even one of the later models that shipped just prior to the
release of 98 isn't going to be up to snuff when it comes to installing XP.
IIRC, it wasn't shipped with 95 but 3.11. I feel sure I installed 95 later.
