Hi

After d/loading anything for an extended period of time
(1-2 hrs) I am unable to shut Windows down without
powering off my PC manually. I am reasonably new to this
game but am sure that all my s/ware and h/ware is working
ok. I use Adaware/Spybot, AVG and diskkeeper (for
defrag) and none of these report any problems.

Anyone any ideas?

Hi

Please have a look at the following articles for Shutdown problems:

Hi

Thanks for this. I have already tried the recommended
patch from http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm but as I
am already on SP1 for XP Home this patch is included
although the site describes my problem exactly.

I can't pinpoint exactly when this started happening so
am unsure if a system restore would do the trick?

Hi

You can revert a System Restore if it isn't successful.

Thanks, i'll give it a go, but I reformatted my HD last
Sunday and I had this problem before this drastic measure!

Hi

In that case an SR may not help - but try it.

Thanks very much for your advice. I'll try it this
evening and post back. If no joy, i've no idea where to
go for resolution.

AlinW,

I had this problem a while back under W2K, and tracked it
down to the print spooler. You might also see an Event
ID 1000 in the Event Viewer. Before you shut down next
time, open a CMD window, and type NET STOP SPOOLER. If
that was the problem, it won't hang on Saving Your
Settings when you shut down. You can add the stop
spooler command to a user logoff script in the Group
Editor (gpedit.msc) to automate the process.

Thanks for this. As u may have seen from my 1st post, I
am kinda new to this game! I have just been to Event
Viewer for the first time ever! I noticed a couple of
repetative errors - VSS and EventSystem in 'Application'
and DCOM in 'System'. I have no idea what these mean but
they do have the rather obvious Red mark next to them!
Grateful for any advice you can provide. I will also try
the NET STOP SPOOLER after next shutdown.

Alin

Double click on each of the errors in the Event Viewer.
This brings up more detail, and you can use the link in
the result to fire off an automated message to Microsoft
with the details. That may get you back some sort of
automated diagnostic from them if that is a known error.

Hi all

Thanks for your help. I cannot believe that it has been
spyware all along that has caused my problem. I use
Spybot S&D and Adaware and AVG. The file in question
was 'dslagent.exe USB'. I cannot believe I have never
spotted this file as I often make changes to startup in
msconfig and I had just ignored it thinking it was
related to my new USB modem.

Sorry for the trouble but I have learned a few things!!
