Hi There! I've recently purchased a new computer where XP Home edition was
pre-installed on the system (didn't receive any cd's but am going to make
copies of XP onto blank disks)... I recently found that I had various
viruses on my computer, so I reset the computer back to factory settings,
which helped some what, except that now I think I have picked up a virus that
is transported thru kazaa. worm.aspiv.a (W32.HLLW.Chemsvy).

My problem is, I would like to format c: but aren't quite sure how to go
about it... I've read a few help sites on reformatting ur hard drive, but am
a little apprehensive about going through with it until I have a full
understanding of what I'm doing as this is the first time that I've had to
format a computer using XP and aren't sure what I need to have BEFORE I
format C:??? (as I don't currently have any boot disks, or XP disks). I
also have a partioned drive which is where the recovery side of things are
kept... If anyone can help me it would be much appreciated!!

Thank you..... Desiree

p/s: I also have one other problem... I'm unable to access any of the
folders that are stored in my documents as it keeps saying that access is
denied. I think I changed the security on these folders before I
re-installed XP, and now they wont work because I forgot to reallow entry to
them before cleaning my pc... Is there anyway that I can gain access back to
these folders again? Or, will this happen once I format C:???

Let me get this straight - you're going to back-up Windows by copying the
Windows folder to CDs - and you think this will allow you to reinstall
Windows?!

Sorry no sympathy here. Anyone who runs a system without an AVP is too
stupid to own a computer, IMNSHO, and that goes double for someone who runs
Kazaa without any form of virus protection.Restoring back to factory
settings is *NOT* an effective means of virus protection - it's not any form
of protection at all!

How did you manage to reset to factory settings? That automatically formats
the drive - oh, wait, you didn't receive any discs with your system - how
did you manage to reset the system then?! Even those with the setup files on
a hidden partition require the use of a set-up disc to access them.
Thank you..... Desiree

Search help and support for 'take ownership' and click the knowledge base
tab. Please be aware that, if you have encrypted the files then you will
*NOT* be able to take ownership as the key will be different. If this is the
case, then your files are as good as gone.

Not true...all my recovery files are on a hidden partition and no disks are
required to access them or use it to format and recover.

The most overlooked advantage to owning a computer is that if they foul up
there's no law against wacking them around a little.

This is a false statement. Certain HP PCs allow access to the recovery
utility through the Start Menu. Furthermore, these PCs are not shipped with
any type of disc at all. Personally, I do not like this concept.
Nevertheless, it is a reality.
