The firewall is installed and has been working for about 1 year. Have SpyBot
and other programs to keep system as clean a possible. About 2 weeks ago I
noticed the windows firewall stopped working. It is installed with all the
correct settings but it does not seem to be working. Computer runing slow and
router is recording outgoing activity when nothing is happening.

Question can it be removed and reinstalled.

get a better one, that monitors both outgoing and incoming traffic, zone alarm
and kerio are both good, and ZA is free. just turn off the alerts, and read
up on what programs should be asking for internet access.

The XP Firewall protects against incoming intrusions only. It does
not do anything about malware that has gotten past your protections,
installed itself onto your computer, and is now phoning home.

Get a "second opinion" on your computer by doing a free online scan at
one of the following free sites:
Bit Defender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
Trend Micro http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Kaspersky Online Scanner http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
Panda ActiveScan http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan
WindowSecurity.com TrojanScan http://windowssecurity.com/trojanscan
Webroot http://www.webroot.com/

Good luck

Have disabled the Windows firewall on all of our computers (14) and installed
COMODO and not to our suprise we discovered all sorts of junk running that
the antivirus and spyware programs did not find. MS should just trash their
antivirus program and buy one for a different vendor.

Is the firewall in Vista the same ?

Sorry but your post makes no sense. Disabling the XP firewall and
installing a 3rd party firewall has not impact on the presences of "junk
running". What MS anti-virus program? Are you talking about - One Care?

Vista's firewall has been extensively reworked. If you want more info on it
post to a Vista newsgroup such as microsoft.public.windows.vista.security.
