xp home edition

I purchased a computer from a company that was upgrading
and it has windows xp professional installed. I tried to
upgrade on line and couldn't as i didn't have the product
key. So I purchased xp home edition this morning and tried
installing it and it wouldn't load over the professional
edition. any ideas?

Greetings --

The only way to change from WinXP Pro to WinXP Home is to format
the drive and start over. There is no supported downgrade path or
technique.

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the
opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of the
installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the
order of boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Their license would be a volume one for their use, and would not cover
sale on to a third party (or at least they would permanently reduce the
number of machines *they* could have it installed on). SO you have to
get your own. You cannot put Home over Pro. You would have to boot the
Home CD, enter setup and at New Install, when it asks where, hit ESC and
delete the existing partition on the disk, then make a new one and start
over clean
