I have attempted several times to install windows XP on a
pentium II 450mhz, 383mb or ram and a western digital 40
gig hard drive. When the installation get near the end I
get a message that cannot find or load
c:/window_NTS$.NLS\i386. This an update from win second
edition. In searching Microsofts support I do not find a
direct reference to this problem. I don't know where to go
from here.

I'd also suggest a clean install rather than an upgrade over Windows 98.
However, more importantly, your computer is a little underpowered for
Windows XP, and you may not be too satisfied with it on a P-II. In my
experience, you need a P-III or better to really get the snap out of Windows
XP. The balance of your hardware sounds fine, but if it were my own system,
I'd leave it with Windows 98 SE for the duration of its lifetime. I wouldn't
even take it to Windows Me, personally.
