OK, I'm a reasonably newbie to networking, but on connecting my laptop via
crossover cable to my desktop, I seem to have trouble viewing each computer
in the workgroup. - I have SP2 on both machines. - Desktop name :MAIN, Laptop
name :JAC
Network connections say the 2 are connected, but I cannot communicate
between the 2.
I have tried :
resetting the IP address manually - No go
Turning off Firewalls - no go
pinging - all OK except "Ping JAC (from MAIN) or ping MAIN (from JAC)
Checked via Device Manager if all hardwear is OK - ALL OK

I am getting to my wits end - Any ideas ??

what do you mean "pinging - all OK except "Ping JAC (from MAIN) or ping MAIN
(from JAC)". posting the result of ipconfig /all here may help.

Run through this network troubleshooter by MVP Hans-Georg Michna. It
will pinpoint the problem areas. Then post back with results of the
troubleshooter if you are still having problems.

Mark,

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer, to start.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.
