I have a PC with XP Home and a laptop with XP Pro networked via a Belkin
wireless router.
Both can access the internet OK.
My problem is that on my network, the desktop PC can see the laptop and
share files etc BUT the laptop can not see the dekstop's files to share files
/ printers.
I have set up IP addresses, have tried with the Norton Internet Security on
and off.
Can anyone help?
Since you have Norton Internet Security, make sure that the Windows
Firewall is turned off.
See if the laptop can ping the desktop from the command line using the
desktop's IP address and computer name. For example:
ping 192.168.2.1
ping desktop
If both pings fail, the problem is probably caused by a firewall on
the desktop. The only way to tell if it's Norton is to un-install
(not just disable) Norton.
If pinging by IP address works and pinging by computer name fails,
make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers:
1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection.
3. Click Properties.
4. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
5. Click Properties.
6. Click Advanced.
7. Click WINS.
8. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.
If both pings succeed, make sure that File and Printer Sharing is
enabled on the desktop.
What happens if you type the desktop's name in the Start | Run box on
the laptop in this format?
\\desktop
