I have a server running RedHat Linux 9 with Samba
providing shares to windows clients. Samba is setup to
authenticate like a windows domain.

Windows 98 machines just need the name of the
samba "windows Domain" and away they go connecting and
authenticating

Windows 2000 workstations "Join the domain"

My question is, I have one laptop comp with xp Home
edition. Can it join/use/authenticate to the
Linux "Domain"?

Please advice

Thanks

Hi, Liam -

The short answer is no, I'm afraid.

The longer answer is that the XP Home machine can access
domain resources but you'll need to authenticate to the
domain controller each time you want to use a shared
resource. XP Home cannot participate as a domain member.

As stated by David Lechnyr in "Unofficial Samba HOWTO" at
http://hr.uoregon.edu/davidrl/samba.html ... "Unfortunately, the most
common problem with Windows XP Home Edition is using Windows XP Home
Edition itself. There are several limits to its design, most noteworthy
being the inability to join or access a domain-based network."
