Can XP Home run IIS 5 and the developer edition of sql
server 2000? I'm looking to purchase a laptop and all I
find at bestbuy and compusa are laptops with XP Home.

XP Home does not come with IIS. You would have to use a 3rd party Web
server like Apache. I don't know if SQL server will run on XP Home. I
would think BestBuy and CompUSA would allow for an upgrade XP Pro. Not
sure. I know Dell does.
 
IIS can only be installed on Windows XP Professional.

You can only run either SQL Server 2000 Personal or Developer Edition on
Windows XP Pro. SQL Server 2000 Standard or Enterprise will only run
on a Server version of Windows.

would you have a problem going with apache and mysql? (ie
a program that needs Ms sql)
The others are right, however. You should find a laptop
that has xp pro if you need it (they DO exist, or request
it instead of home), since your still looking.
 
Thanks guys. I figured that xp home would not allow me,
just wanted to double check. I got a contract for next
week and I'll be traveling during the holidays. Not a
good time for a contract, but its extra $$. I'll probably
just go to a store and purchase an inexpensive laptop,
can the current OS and install what I want.

Once I get the work done, I'll uninstall xp pro or
win2kpro, reinstall the orginal software, wrap the laptop
as a Happy New Years present and give it to my wife. Ha,
like that would start the new year off on a good foot.

Most places will upgrade the OS for a charge. Ask Bestbuy if you can
get the laptop with XP Pro instead of Home.

Se if you can get a Pro upgrade with them.
