Following are registry entries that control Help and Support. Check
them all and correct/add if necessary. Sometimes that get corrupted
and/or deleted.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\TypeLib\{FC7D9E00-3F9E-11D3-93C0-00C
04F72DAF7}\1.0\0\win32
Default value: C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe\1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\TypeLib\{FC7D9E00-3F9E-11D3-93C0-00C

Default value: C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe\

Default Value: C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\HelpCtr.exe\2

I've been reading about this on support sites for what seems to be an eternity. I've tried all of the tricks and suggestions, but nothing has worked yet. If you find something that really does work, please let me know (and based on the number of threads related to help and support not working) and the hundreds of others with the same problem. THANKS!

Ignore my other posting

A stroke of luck! I went into one of my other Office XP Pro apllications since I wasn't getting "help" to properly appear there either. I clicked on "help" and then clicked on "Detect and Repair". I know a box came up and stated it would detect and repair all XP errors. To my surprise, it corrected the help and support within the XP OS as well as the Office XP applications. Good luck!

Hi,

pafos- did you ever get the "blank index" problem solved- if so, please let me know how

Check this site:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/fix_windows_xp_help.htm

Or go to Start > run and type in: helpctr -regserver or to totally
reinstall help and support, assuming you installed to C:
Make hidden folders visible first and then go to
C:\windows\inf\pchealth.inf right-click and choose install. You will
need the XP cd and may need to know the location of the folders
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and Windows\System32\dllcache.

Good luck

Hi,

You go to Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > view tab 'check
show all hidden and system files' and check 'show content of system
folders.'

Or, to totally reinstall help and support, copy and paste the
following line in a Start > Run prompt:

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%systemroot%\inf\pchealth.inf

The program will ask for the Windows XP CD, alternatively, try to
point it to the Windows\System32\dllcache folder and the
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folders.

HTH

Or, to totally reinstall help and support, copy and paste the
following line in a Start > Run prompt:

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection
%systemroot%\inf\pchealth.inf

I tried to run:--- it is stating that "incorrect arguements for LaunchINFSection().
Syntax: rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection <INF Filename (required)>,<Install Section(optional)>

That's because you are pasting only the upper line, you have to paste
_both_

rundll32.exe(Space)advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection(Space)%systemroot%\inf\pchealth.inf

Paste and then substitute(Space) for a space and see if it works

thank you Roger- I think I will give up on this piece of junk- seems no one else has been able to fix this specific problem
I was happier with windows98- probably the writers of 98 were more competent
