shut down after online about 3 Minutes. Can I download XP
security updates to my other computer with Windows ME. and
tranfer over. It seems the update will only install when
downloading to the XP machine. Any answer much
appreciated. HSL

If your computer is infected with viruses, installing Windows Updates
is not going to cure the problem.

There is a very helpful virus removal newsgroup you may wish to post to:

What virus? Sasser? Blaster?

You need to get rid of the virus and then download updates. The
updates won't get rid of the virus for you.

For more help, post back with the details of the virus. If it's
giving you a message that says it's shutting down, post the exact
verbatim text of the message so we can see which virus it is.

Sounds like you have the Blaster or Sasser virus on the machine.

On your other computer download Stinger (free) from
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger When you have downloaded it copy the
file to a 3.5 inch diskette (it is only 800 kb or so and will fit
easily).

Boot the Windows XP machine into Safe Mode. Insert the diskette with
Stinger on it and run it to scan and clean the machine.

To start Windows XP in Safe Mode turn on the computer and start
tapping the F8 key rapidly just as soon as the first information of
any kind shows on the screen. Keep tapping until the Windows Startup
Menu appears and choose Safe Mode from the menu.

Once the machine has been cleaned do not repeat do not connect it to
the Internet until you have a firewall in place, otherwise it will
immediately become reinfected. If you have a full time Internet
connection (cable or DSL) then unplug it until the firewall is set up.
The built-in firewall in Windows XP is just fine for this purpose.
You can turn it on by opening Control Panel - Network Connections.
Right click on the icon for your Internet connection and select
Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and click on the checkbox to
activate the built-in firewall. Click on Apply and OK as needed to
exit.

Once the firewall is in place and Sasser has cleaned the existing
virus(es) from the machine you can shut down and restart normally and
reconnect the internet

Good luck

Yes...I was in this situation a couple of weeks ago. Seems that these worms
know what we will do to fight them and tries to shut down the computer. That
message that you are shutting down looks official but its from the worm.

When you are being shut down you have 30 secs to do the following.
start/run/system -a
Now you have stopped the clock. I got Norton's antivirus....get the one you
like...and look for the worm....you have to stay ready do stop it while you
install and operated the antivirus. The worm knows you are after it and puts
up a struggle.
