I am running XP pro, and the sound had been OK for a year.
Recently, My XP lost the sound that my speaker just can not
play anything. Even the system "ding" or system turn on/off
sound are no longer heard.
However, I went to control panel -> speech -> preview voice,
My speaker can clearly sounding those coputer synthesized voices.
This prove the speaker is connected correctly and is turned on.
But there is just no sound except for this preview voice of Speech.

Is there anyone can give me a hint what may goes wrong.
The volumn control are checked and there is no mute at all.

Thanks
Albert

If you disabled the beep in tweak ui. You need to reenable it.
Otherwise no sounds will work.
If the beep brothers you can delete or rename the file in
c:\windows\media\Windows XP Ding.wav

Thanks for all your help, I got my sound back. Although
I did not know which step I did actual solve the problem.

I followed all instructions fron the "where did my sound go?"
restore all default setup for regedit. update to newest window
media player, update to newest c-media driver, it still not working.
Then I change my Audio setting's default device from "C-media Wave device"
to "C-media Wave Device [2]" and the sound suddenly comes back.
I remember before I did so may updates and regedits, I tried
"C-media Wave Device [2]" and it was not working either, but
after so many changes and update the "C-media Wave Device [2]" works.
I have no idea which step helped.

Thanks for all your help and some other people's suggestion on
other threads.

Albert
