I am about to purchase a new computer which will have XP
as the OS, and I have the option of upgrading the memory
from 512MB to 1GB. However, I have a number of older
programs that may have to run in Win 98 compatability mode.

Will upgrading the memory cause issues as it would have
with Win 9x which was limited to supporting no more than
512MB?

XP can support more memory ( 3GB??). However, take a close look at what you
will be running, 512mb is usually plenty of memory, so unless you are really
planning on running it hard, you may not need to spend the extra money, but
if you do, it won't cause any problems

On my 1-Gig memory configuration, my actual memory
use rarely goes above 350 Megabytes. The remainder goes to
the System Cache. Unless you are a heavy graphics or video
user, 512 is more than adaquate.

No.

No it wasn't. Although for some reason, many people believe this,
it was *not* true. There was a minor problem (which occurred only
on some computers with over 512MB), but it was easily solved by
limiting the size of the vcache to 512MB in system.ini.

But why do you want 1GB? Most people running a common range of
business application will see no benefit by going above 512MB
(and maybe not even above 256 or 384MB). Unless you do things
like heavy photo editing, you probably shouldn't spend the extra
money.
