Please help me if you can?

This appears to be a random problem i.e.. it doesn't seem to matter what
critical or otherwise update is being installed.

I have done a clean install of XP Home edition, on a brand new Maxtor 120GB
hard disc, and immediately used the update function to do the updates.

They appear to download fine, but when I try to install them, the little
installation progress bar goes about 3 chunks along, and then the whole PC
locks up, and I need to press and hold the power button to turn the PC off.
I have done this so many times now, that XP would not actually boot, so I
have had to reinstall the whole of XP, now for the third time. Incidentally,
I have managed, at the first attempt to install SP1, and a few other crit.
updates, but since then had to format and start again.

This is driving me nuts, and am in two minds whether to just turn on my
firewall, and be really vigilant, or keep trying to install the updates,
which I really know I should.

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks in advance

Chris

If you connected to internet without yr Firewall enabled there's a near
certainty that yr sys is now infected. You must turn on the firewall
immediately. Or install one eg ZoneAlarm is free
