Ok...two different computers, different set up, software and locations...the
only thing in common is that my wife uses both of them.

As of last night both computers had the problem, on my PC running the old
KB894391 hotfix solved the problem.

On the other PC I am totally stuck...the error pops up about 1 minute after
booting along with the svchost.exe application error, and you have no choice
other than to reboot.

The faulting module is msi.dll.

1) I have removed the old HP drivers and installed new ones from the HP
website (its a new printer anyway)
2) Tried the KB894391 hotfix

I only get about 1 minute before the errors pop up so I can't get microsoft
update to run...I am pretty sure that this PC is a few updates behind.

I am about to go and try fiddling with Norton just in case but would
appreciate any suggestions that you guys have.

Windows XP Home (SP2)
Fully patched (upto abround 15 September 2006..last time I was at the office)

Try Safe Mode with Network Support till you get the Windows updates.
You can start Norton a/v manually in Safe Mode.

Ok thanks for the idea.

As an update I managed to get Windows to run by disabling automatic updates
and manually patching the files...which stabalised the system.

Unfortunatley this was followed by yet another problem appearing by thats
life.

Thank you joe.
