XP freezing at startup

I'm trying to fix a friends PC - it has both XP and Linux installed.
When booting to XP, it freezes after about 30 seconds, starting from
when the logon screen appears. It can just sit there, or you can log in
and let the desktop load if you're fast enough, but no matter what you
do, you have about 30 seconds before everything stops, mouse and
keyboard don't move a thing. If I boot into Linux, this does not
happen, so I don't think it's a hardware problem.
Any suggestions? I suppose there's always the standard MS
solution...reinstall the OS...for the 18th damn time.

Did this problem just start? Will it boot into safe mode? If so, try a
system restore to just before the problem started. Another option from
safe mode is to do some clean boot troubleshooting.

That is NOT the standard solution from MS, it comes from stupid OEM
support people and people that don't know better.

Well it turns out there was some program called F-Secure that was
messing up the whole PC, and causing the boot up freeze. I don't think
MS makes perfect programs, but I hate 3rd party programs that wreck
everything. I had to remove it and now the problem is gone.

F-secure the anti virus program? Thanks for posting back with the
outcome.
