XP freezes during startup

on Home, SP2. I have been running BestCrypt software w/ no problems. I
installed an upgrade, over my current version & when it got to asking
me to reboot, I said no, did some other stuff & then did the reboot.

It goes through the splash screen & freezes after the screen goes dark
but before the mouse shows up and the log in screen shows. Waited
several minutes, nothing.

I can get to safemode, so I uninstalled bestcrypt & still no go. I
turned off everything in msconfig & that didn't help.

I turned off my passwords & deleted all but one account. Still didn't
help. I reinstalled bestcrypt from safe mode. Nothing there.

Oh, did I say that I had turned off Recovery Point?

Now it gets really strange, but I hope there is a hint here: I booted
from the Windows CD, entered recovery console picked the operating
system (only one, but you have to pick it anyway) and then exited.
Upon my next reboot into regular windows I GET IN!!!! The msconfig has
everything turned off except for 2 necessary services (remote call x's
2) and 10 startup items, some of which aren't labeled. I tried doing
this w/out entering the recovey console and it DIDN'T work.

My next step is to reinstall XP over my existing version, but I really
don't want to do that.

And my antivirus & trojan software are current and all are ok.

TIA,

Hi,

Method for Repairing PC
=====================
Note: To do this procedure you need to have a retail copy of the Windows XP
cd-rom. Also please note that the Recovery cd supplied with OEM system
will not help.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.
