XP Failure - Won't install

Big problem folks. Cannot reinstall Xp as I keep getting ntoskrnl missing and
then config\system corrupt message. Tried to Repair the OS but failed after I
get to the place wjhere I select "r". Tried to reinstall full and still
failed at the same spot. How do i go to MSDOS and format c:\. I cannot even
get to safe mode with Dos prompt as it fails before I get there.
 
You don't select 'r' - that stands for the recovery console. You skip that
step and go to the next one - which should have the repair option.
