XP fails to load

My XP home version on my laptop will not load. I've run
diagnostics on it and I get IDE confidence test failure,
read test failure and verify test failure on several
addresses. I'm assuming several windows files are
corrupt or the disk space that holds the files is bad.

What are my options? Can I repair this installation or
do I need to do a full re-installation? In either case,
are my data files (such as photos, financial, etc.) that
I haven't backup up gone, or will they still be there
after repair or re-installation?

Thanks for any help!

Which diagnostics did you run?

The critical diagnostic at this point is the manufacturer's diagnostic
test for the hard drive. You can download this (free) from the hard
drive manufacturer's web site.

If that diagnostic gives you a fault or failure code for the drive
then it is time to get a new hard drive. 2.5 inch drives for laptops
are not generally available in most discount stores but any good
comnputer service shop should be able to order you one if they don't
have them in stock.

And be sure to check out the warranty status on the hard drive. Often
the hard drive has a separate manufacturer's warranty that has a
longer term than the computer itself. Not always, but often enough to
be worth checking out.

Good luck
