XP Explorer crashes when right clicking?

when R. clicking on a drive icons properties, explorer
crashes! Also, I have short cuts to the drives on the
desktop, when clicking now, I just get the search utility?
Changing the Do not cache thumbnails box seems to alter
this sometimes?
Any answers or suggestions please.
Thanks in advance.

This may be caused by an application running in the background. Check
your startup settings. Applications that start with Windows can be
found here:
- the WIN.INI, section [windows], entries "run=" and "load="
- the Registry keys
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
- the folders
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\ALL USERS\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\START MENU\PROGRAMS\STARTUP

Use a run of regedit.exe

Open to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
and in the right pane d-click Default and in the pane enter the exact
four characters
none
and OK

(That's the second problem - repeat at
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell
in due course.)

Then open
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers
Highlight it and use File - Export so you could restore it.
One of the subkeys when you expand that is causing trouble. A suspect
in particular would be TargetProperties, others with Names rather than
'clsid' numbers like {596ab0- etc would be next suspects.

Delete these one by one, testing in a new launch of Explorer to see if
he crash on a Drive icon is fixed: re-import your file before going on
to the next
