Hi to all,

For some strange reason, my XP machine is taking about 15 minutes to
boot up. The HDD is constantly flashing but in the task manager CPU
usage is not allocated to any particular process.

The only I/O is for lsass.exe but that is not much (less that a 1 mb).

When I launch an executable, it is shown in the processes tab of the
task manager but never gets to the applications tab and never
launches. It basically stays in the processes tab.

Checked msconfig and there are no programs in startup.

Any advice?

Steven.

I am going to give you a real quick and watered down reply to get you going
with some ideas. First of all try safemode. If the problem goes away then
it is some startup program. If the issue goes away or it does not you can
also try booting into a different user. If you have no other users to log
into then you can try the administrator account. If you are using XP Home
you can log into the administrator in safemode and create a new user here.
In Pro you can do the same thing. Make sure you also try the different user
on a regular reboot. Sometimes startup problems can be specific to funkiness
in the individual user accounts. How long has this been a problem? You
could also give a simple system restore a shot. If you get anywhere with
this process reply back and we can give you more specific instructions.
