I had encrypted a folder using XP ntfs filing system.
This was done on a hdd which served as a backup.

I then reformatted the main 0-S hdd (XP), but I now can't read the contents
of the "old" encrypted hdd folder.

I did all the standard stuff, right click, properties, encryption-sharing,
unchecking the hidden and encrypted boxes, how-ever, the folders remain
encrypted (in the green).

I went to dos and used the cipher command, and see that the files within the
folders are still encrypted, and I am not sure if i am using the right
cipher commands...

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Rev,

If you did not export either the original user accounts certificates and
keys or (if you created one) the recovery agents certs and key or you do not
have a full backup of the profile of the original user account then those
files will not be recoverable.

I still have the original Hdd's, they have not yet been formatted or erased.
They are connected to the new main XP formatted hdd, and the data is
accessible, tho in NTFS

How would I extract said original user accounts certificates and/or keys (I
did NOT created a key).

Thanks,
Rev

I thought you said you reformatted the main harddisk where your profile
lives and only retained the data drive ?

No, I still have the Original main hdd with the xp o-s, but I can't access
some of those files that were originally encrypted.
Can you please help me access those files that are encrypted? I've tried the
convention tactics within properties, but I am thinking that I need to use
the CIPHER command.

Can you please help?

Thanks,
The Rev

If you still have your odd hard drive which had the operating system and
your old profile on it.
Then put it back and boot to it. You can then export your keys so you can
import them into the new profile you have on your new hard disk with the new
install of Windows.
Or am I still missing how many hard disks you have and what is on them ?
