I'm admining a Lacie Ethernet Disk for a client. I called Lacie about
this problem
but they were unable to help.

My client is using Mac OS 9.2 for all desktops. The Lacie 80GB
Ethernet Disk comes with XP Embedded Version 5.1 (Build
2600xpsp1.020828-120)

The disk has a C dirve, 3.9GB and a D drive, 70GB. The C drive has the
XP OS and the D drive has the network shares.
By default when you put this thing on the network you can connect to
it via SMB and Appleshare. This was working fine for 2 months.

Now we cannot see the disk from the Mac using Appleshare. But we can
connect via SMB. My client uses Mac OS 9 which has no SMB client so
temporarily I installed a trial version of 'Dave Client' which is
working fine.

Back to the real problem. So I log onto the disk using Remote
Desktop Connection. I open 'My Computer' and I see Local Disk (C) and
Local Disk (D).
I mouseover C and see Free Space 0 bytes, Total Size 3.90GB. The D has
53GB free, 70GB total.

The problem is that the C drive is NOT full. If I select all files and
folders and get properties I see a collective size of 1.8GB. So there
is 2.1GB missing.

What is using this 2.1GB? At the DOS prompt, I do 'dir'and it says no
free space. In Computer Management it shows the C as no free
space.Possibly virtual memory,
but I could be way wrong. The VM
property sheet shows paging file as System Managed Size, currently
136MB. The box itself has 128MB physical RAM.

When the share is visible on the network, only the D drive is
available. Users do not have access to the C Drive. The only way to
get to the C drive is via remote log in. Nothing has been installed on
the C Drive. And as it is XP Embedded, Disk Cleanup is not present.
There is no
CD ROM so I can't boot it from a CD.

In Services I see "Miramar Appletalk File Server" with Automatic
startup, but not started. This is obviously why the Macs cannot
access via Appleshare. When I try to start it I get:

Errors occured during the system rebuild operation. Please view the
DOS text file for an error report.

So I presume there's some attempt to write to disk (which is
apparently full). And what is the the DOS text file anyway?

Anyhow, why is it saying no free space, what is taking up my disk
space and how do I recover my diskspace? I let Lacie login remotely
but
they had no clue.

Any help would be appreciated.

thanx

Roger

My advice would be to return it to Lacie for repair. This newsgroup is for
OEM's like Lacie on how to build XPe images for deployment, not how to
repair them. Only Lacie will be familiar with how their image was built and
configured.

With all my respect to Howard Smith hint, I can suggest the following:

1. Check the TEMP folder. It could be that orphan files are there.
2. Check the Recycler folder. Sometimes it's hidden, so enable viewing
of system and hidden files
3. As a last resort check the C: disk itself - chkdsk c: /f
