I am unable to send any xp document as an attachment to my email to my
Win98 friends because it either comes out garbled or with an "unable to open"
error message.
My old computer had Office 2000 but I no longer have the disks to load
it on to my XP machine.
I just want to be able to send documents that will come out exactly as
they are sent.
Any ideas?

What email client are you using? What steps do you take to send a
file? The more information you give us, the more likely we can find a
cause.

I have used lycos, yahoo and netzero email systems following their respective proceedures for attaching files. I have tried it with the .txt, .wps and .rtf extensions but they all come back the same. To test, I email a doc to myself. When I open the email on a Win98 we have (or have a friend in the office open it), everything is garbled, when I opened it with my XP its fine.

At one point in time I remember that XP allowed me to convert documents to a
prior word program but making the change screwed up my computer. Gateway took
me step by step to correct the problem. Instead I now have two operating
systems on my hard drive [that's another story] and still cannot convert
documents to the prior words program so they can be emailed.

thanx in advance for any help.

There are several factors which may be causing your problem. The first
one that comes to mind is that the people you are sending to "have to
have" the program on their PC that "you" used to create the attachment.

ps Often people assume that apps like Word come with windows, and that
everybody else has Word. for example
