XP dual boot 98 on a different drive

I have a new PC with XP Home installed. My old (now defunct) PC was
Windows 98.

I have taken the hard drive from my old machine and put it in my new
one. What I am aiming for is to be able to dual boot into either OS.
XP is on the C drive, 98 on the D drive.

I'm not bothered about it being a slick operation, I want to use XP
99% of the time with 98 only for one specific purpose. If it's
relevant, that purpose is to be able to use my Minolta Dimage Scan
Dual slide scanner, which apparently has a hardware incompatibility
with XP.

I have downloaded GAG and installed it on a floppy. Using this, I can
boot into Windows 98 by using the 'swap drives' option. At the start
of booting, I get an error that EMM386 cannot be loaded; on hitting
Enter, bootup continues and I'm into W98. However, I cannot use the
scanner as the system reports that SCSI driver is not working
correctly. I have re-installed this, but no difference.

So I'm now at a bit of a loss as to what to do next. Any suggestions
would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Simon

You may do better to reinstall 98 on the second drive. See my web site,
www.dougknox.com and go to Win XP Tips

For Win9x/Me: Install 98/Me after XP is Installed.

You may also want to look into Boot It Next Generation, www.bootitng.com.
This program will allow you to easily choose between hard drives/OS's to
boot.

This is incorrect, Paulo, as there is no BOOTSECT.DOS file for the XP Boot
loader to process. You can't simply tell it to boot from the second drive.

You not need to reinstall win98, the only thing that you need is edit the
boot.ini file in the root of drive C, to put a line for win98. Some like
this:
{multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\Windows="Microsoft Windows 98"},
without the brackets. then go to system properties - Start and recovery and
mark the option "Show the Operational Systems menu". then restart the
computer and you will see the option to boot from drive D. comments....
