XP downloads cause non-restart

This Compaq Presario S5140WM came from Wal-Mart with factory loaded XP Home edition.
Got it three months ago. Since the "first" time I tryed getting live updates, to the recent direct
visits to Microsoft for the downloads (MS recommends based on thier scan some 16 packs), I cannot
proceed any further. Starting from a factory default + Compaq stuff, I down load, then try the needed
"restart" or even cold start. Each time I get the "windows won't restart" because of some change
screen. The restore doesn't work (I did restore points several times) . I end up doing a recovery
back to factory defaults.I think I'm up to a dozen times now in these last few days.
Is there any way to interogate this problem ? IE error log files, and find out why ? I've run
diagnostics, even had Symantec scan for bugs and it's clean. Fortunatley I have DSL, so online
support is feasable. After much studying, testing, I just want to get beyond this (with faith it will keep).
Any suggestions before I apply for MS certifcate credits for my training ?

I don't know which of the 16 are a problem. Can i live with out these "Security fixes" as long as I have
Norton or Zona Alarm Pro packages ? I don't dare go anywhere but secure sites like this and keep
my port off when away.

All wit and wisdom will be greatly appreciated !

No, contagion-ware is always one step ahead.

What did Wal-Mart/Compaq tech support say?

Bee, Thanks for the reply:

The "Change screen" I'm refering to is the error message screen(white on black)
that tells you windows has detected an error and will not restart because something
has changed. You have some options such as safe mode, recovery, etc. I've done more
reading from other MS info, and maybe I can watch more carefully this time. I'm currently
still at default settings, so I'm goin' after those fixes (again). Compaq rep didn't have anything
to say I could use at this point. I suppose I could try to down load one at a time and restart
each time until I find it. Thats about a days work. Lets hope it does not come to that.

This is a duplicate of my post sent at about 13:30 GMT today. Hope this one
get through. Pinging MS server failed though ("Timed out").

Now that it is made clear, in all the downloading sessions, the entire group
of 16 updates were picked in one batch, the probability of the latest
security update, MS04-003 -- (aka KB832483) for closing a flaw in Microsoft
Data Access Components -- being the cause of your grief is overwhelming.
This patch was posted on Jan 13/14. Please read:
http://tinyurl.com/2oxak
and in particular the first link referring to re-registering oledb32.dll.

If this is tested not to be the case, then, perhaps you may like to
investigate the excellent Update Checklist by MVP Jupiter Jones:

Thanks again:

Compaq service was of no help. Long distance phone call got cut off. and Internet responses were slow
and information was general & vague. I've since recovered again after an unsuccesful restart. Note: none
of the options work with this preoble (ie safe mode, restore, etc.) I'm going to try to eliminate thisone
patch (832483) from my next attempt and see. I'm still concerned about any more problems like this
nocking me back to default settings. I'll need to have a constantly updated CD pack of applications
and data backed up and ready. FYI: I took the choice of going the hardware/tech route along time ago
with a minimal software base. So from my perspective, i just want this thing to work ! (ha)

We'll see how the next gyration goes !

Well I'm still stuck with what to do. i cannot take microsoft hot fix security downloads, install them, and perform a restart.
I just get the "We appologize" screen for why windows won't start. My options...all of them do not work. forget
restore....only destructive recovery works. If this is the case, and no bugs, no diagnostic problems, why
bother to reformat ? I'm still researching. Printed a book worth. My next move is to take one fix at a time (haven't done yet.) But still screwed, cannot move out of first gear that way. Why bother If I'll lose everything. Wal-Mart warranty
defers to Compaq. HP/Comaq reps (Phone, On-line support, e-mail, India & USA) have not provided meaning full data yet.
Jupiter Jones sent me a link to a "fix" for SP1 downloads & Compaq 6300 series. Compaq's answer is it won't
fix this (It's a S5140WM)This has an AMD Athlon chip, must be the chip/firmware set for the 6300 is different.

This really sucks. If Compaq can't get me a fix, I suppose I need to work hard at getting them to take this back.
Gotta try some more information avenues.

Any and all information is greatly appreciated !

The upd offered bef SP1 are Crit/Security 46, Recomm 25, Drivers 2
aft SP1 16
17 2
Do I understand that you have not sorted out SP1 yet? You are aware, of
course, that SP1 needs to be downloaded and installed alone, on its own, not
in company with any other upd.

If you have difficulty with SP1, then, you are lucky, for the remedy of your
grief can be narrowed to this SP1, in the first instance. Starting from a
*clean install* of WinXP (27m), install of SP1 (from CD obtainable from the
local MS representative for a small sum/free; 9m (12m in the version with
archive)) completes our first stage. There is no extraneous baggage. Check
Disk should report "clean", and System File Check ( [Start] > [Run] > Type
in sfc /scannow > [OK] ) without needing any "retry". Create a System
Restore Pt.

Now, secure an on-line connection with your ISP. Before the first web
contact, enable the built-in Internet Connection Firewall ( [Start] >
[Connect to...] > ISP >[Properties] > [Advanced] tab ). Download, install,
update ( if any ) and run all necessary protection software, in particular,
ZoneAlarm. Create a System Restore Pt.

Download and Install the first 4 Critical/Security Upd in the sequence as
offered, viz. 330994, 824145, 828035, 825119. While they are being
downloaded in one batch, get Auto Upd set up ( [Start] > Rt. click [My Cpt]
[Properties] > [Automatic Updates] tab > Tick [Keep my cpt up to date...]
[Download the upd automatically...] ). Before the downloading phase is
complete, disable/exit all open, running programmes in the Notification Area
and the Task Manager. Hopefully the auto upd will begin here, being
indicated by the upd icon in the Notification Area, and will take over the
rest of the updating.

Irrespective of whether the auto upd is on or off, when the 4 manual
downloading is complete, reboot.
Well........ Good luck.

If all is well thus far, (1) pick out the downloaded upd from the Temporary
Internet File ( highlight it in the Disk Cleanup window and click [Detail] )
and move them one by one to the desktop (use cut-and-paste, not
copy-and-paste, which doesn't work ) to be saved on CD, for latter tries if
needs be, and (2) enable the previously disabled programmes. The auto upd
has resume function, picking up where it was last cut off ( e.g. dropped
phone line), so ignore this process in the background while you get on with
your computing. The download of the remaining upd will take hours to
complete. When you are notified, don't forget to disable all open
programmes before the install.

So, 1½h into the recovery, you do get an inkling of imminent success or
failure. This is not too unbearable. The thrusts of the procedure
described above are (1) maintenance of a contamination-free, pollution-free
environment, and, (2) updating managed in the main by the computer itself.

If this fails again - bless your soul - you have all the necessary starting
software on CD. Retry, one by one this time, is a piece of cake.

Wish you the very best of luck.

Ignore the 17 recommended updates after SP1. Should be 25.

On to something:
After my last fully "clean" destructive recovery, I started taking the recommended critical
downloads one at a time. One in particular I found to be the culprit (I'll explain). after that
one caused another full destructive recovery, I managed to aquire each of the others, and
perform successful "restarts" after each one. Now, the one in question, I should have read
into it alittle further. "Update Rollup ! for Windows XP Is Available (826939) is the villian !
After reading, and printing the description ofeach of its "rolled-up" components (22ea), I'll
have to figure out which of these I really need. Shame on M.S. ! Does this big package
mixed with win2000, XP 32 & 64 bit, package work on anybody elses computer ?
Maybe it's just this chipset or hardware package that can't handle this well.

(Thanks again for the input and response....This all started because I expected better
service from all this "automatic" stuff. Little did I know I'd have to wade through all this.)
We'll see how it goes with the next phase. I have to confirm what this system can handle.
Either way...no more automatic updates for me.
If i want any piece of mind, I'll have to do weekly "PM's" manually for all (MS, Firewall & virus, etc.)

Thank you for the feed back.

One more point you may or may not be aware of:
The Automatic Update gives you the 22 updates in discrete packages, not one
whole bundle as KB826939, aka Rollup 1. The manual download of KB826939 is
available from the Windows Update Catalogue (Standard version, 8.96MB) or
from the regular Windows Update site, after a scan (Express-installation
version, 2.7MB, which requires internet connection during the install
phase). Also, if any one of these 22 patches has already embedded in the
OS, the download-and-install of KB826939 will fail.
