XP double-click setting wont's stick

XPsp2 fully updated and malware free (presumably) all of a sudden
began exhibiting single-click behavior instead of double-click
behavior. Resetting in Tolls>Folder options does not stick.

Pointers appreciated.

Addendum -- double-click IS chosen, and selection shows as double-
click, but functionality remains single-click.
 
Try setting the single click, reboot, reset to double click. Sometimes
toggling a setting along with a reboot will clear things out.

Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately, that hasn't done the trick.
It's been tried several times, along with the Set Defaults button. The
functionality remains single-click.

You could try reinstalling the mouse software, or even buy a new
mouse. They don't cost all that much.
 
Another possibility is that a single clickis sensed as double click. In
Mouse applet try a slkower speed for double click.
