I encountered this problem when starting my computer this
morning - it shut down normally yesterday. I keep getting
the same black and white page that offers to start in the
last know configuration or to start windows normally; but
whatever I do it returns to this page
Any idea?
Thanks for your kind help
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Can you access Safe Mode - from the same screen - and try a System Restore?

Hi

If 'Last Known...' doesn't help and you can't access Safe Mode, you will
have to look towards a 'Repair' install - unless you are seeing any other
error messages that may help. Unfortunately this will mean having to
re-download/re-install the Windows Updates:

Thanks again
What I am particularly concerned about are a number of
files I don't want to lose; do you mean to reload Windows
entirely, reformat ...
How could I possibly get those files before I do that

Hi

If you following the directions on the web page I posted, your files,
programs and settings should be retained. I've never had any problems using
it.

OK I will do that and will keep you posted whether this
works or not.
thanks again
Daniel

Whether safe mode, safe mode with prompt, last
configuration, normal start, I get the same loop that
doesn't allow me to do anything - no prompt. The only
time I get a prompt is when I insert the recovery CD I
have from e-machine, but the options are total recovery,
i.e. delete all, or boot from CD and I get a prompt A:\
(not the diskette drive) but I can't switch to C; and DIR
does give me the contents of the CD with reboot.exe but
if I type that after A:\ I am back to square one .....

Try this:

Sounds like you really cannot access your c: drive. If you can, look for
c:\windows\options\cabs - many manufacturers place the OS "cab" (cabinet)
files there as well as a setup.exe so you can reinstall/repair install or
whatever without reformat.

You might try a start up floppy made on someone else's Win 98 machine to
boot up on to get there.

Another possibility is to borrow or buy another hard drive, install the
system on that the hook up your old c: drive as a slave and retrieve your
data the reformat from scratch on the old drive.

Your hard drive MAY be having problems - in which case you may want to look
on the drive to find out who made it and check the manufacturer's web site
for a utility to check the hard drive.
