XP doesn't read CD or floppy disc

I am unable to retrieve any data from my floppy discs or
my CD. For floppy disc I get "Disc not formatted" and
with the CD plus I get nothing. Can anybody help?

First thing to try would be a complete virus check.

Go to Control Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager and look for
the two devices - see if there are any warning signs against them

For the floppy, I would then highlight it; take Action - Uninstall and
reboot to let PnP find it again.

For the CD, especially if it is not present, there may be an 'orphaned'
entry in the registry: To tidy up, get a registry patch file,
cdgone.reg, from www.aumha.org/downloads/cdgone.zip, extract it, r-click
on it and merge it into the registry

You will then need to reinstall any third party CD burning software that
you use.
