It doesn't know that you've stopped the Internet because that's not the
way the program was written. It takes up very few resources and there
is no reason for you to turn it off to play your game.

In Security Center set it to not monitor the firewall status.

Maybe it's a networked game on a private LAN and the firewall is causing
problems for it.

Good point, although if the OP has a lan he should just learn to
configure his firewall properly. Just goes to remind me never to make
assumptions about what an end user really means. ;-)

Your answer to just stop the alerting makes the most sense.

Agreed.

I couldn't think of any other reason why he'd want the FW off.

I figured if he knew enough to turn the FW off and on he didn't need the
alert :)

Thank you, Malke.

Thanks a bunch guys,i guess i should of stated i am using cable as my ISP
line.I dont fully trust Computer Associates fire wall to stop all internet
connection,so i disable the connection by turning off my modem and disable
the internet icon on my taskbar.(bottom right corner) I was hoping that would
stop any program from trying to connect to the internet.I also edit family
videos with Movie Maker 2 which requires a 1.5 ghz processor,and i have a
40gb hardrive with 1024 memory.Thats all i have.When i play games such as
Nascar2003.i can run it at 1600 by 1200,16bit.Sometimes when the game jerks
alil i think its a program trying to run.I allready know how to set my PC for
performance.
Thanks again

OK, first of all there is no need to turn off the cable modem. That will
cause other problems. There is no reason to stop the firewall. If no
programs are running and the machine is clean, nothing will be trying
to access the Internet anyway.

You left out the most important piece of hardware information: your
video card. Maybe your video card just isn't up to the job. You also
don't have a very powerful processor. Maybe you should try running your
game at a lower resolution with less "eye candy". Also make sure you
have all patches for the game and the latest drivers for your video and
sound hardware.

Certainly it is a good idea to stop extraneous programs when you are
running a game, but you've taken it to an unnecessary extreme. Post
back with your video card information and we'll be able to tell you
more. My guess is that you want to play some graphically-intense games
at top resolution with all the bells and whistles turned on and your
computer just doesn't have the muscle for it.

That's what I was thinking, too. You beat me to it. :)

Well, there you go then. You haven't got a gaming box there. As for
upgrading, bear in mind that there really isn't any point in upgrading
that box if you want to game. The processor is just too old and slow.
You should just buy a new computer.

My boys have what I consider very middle-of-the-road gaming systems.
They've got AMD's running at around (IIRC) 2.8MHz which is lower-end
for gaming but I wanted to get one more year out of those motherboards
before I went to PCI-e. They've got a gig of RAM and Nvidia 6800GT
256MB cards which were mid-level cards when I bought them. They were
still $300/ea. They can play Doom 3 and Serious Sam 2 - not on the
highest settings. The older boy is a World of Warcrafter and he can
play with all the bells/whistles turned on. So these boxen do just fine
for what they want to do now.

Do some research before you buy your next machine so you know what
you'll need to be a 133t gamer d00d. ;-)

I guessed as much but felt like adding a little humour <g> I don't post
too often and only when I can be reasonably sure I'm not giving out the
wrong info <g> you've only got to ask Will Denny how long it took to
persuade me to subscribe to XP General <g>

I've learned a lot lurking around the ng's and think you and the other
regulars do a great job.
