I had a drive fail. Using western digital utilities I had
done a complete drive to drive copy. I swapped the "exact
copy" backup drive in for the master failed drive and the
Windows XP boot hangs up just before the desktop should
appear. Computer is not frozen, mouse works. No messages
regarding errors, activation, etc, just never finishes
boot.

I had a similar problem. I wanted to replace an old 40G
drive with a new 160G. So I used partition magic 8.0 to
copy the partition as is on the new drive. I would worry
about resizing it bigger later.

Windows thought the new drive was "E:" rather than C:,
and that took a long time for Windows to figure out. it
did eventuially boot, like countless minutes.

However, it would come up eventually and partially run,
but complain about missing things here and there.

My only resolution was to do a windows FRESH install from
the original CDROM. Yes, I had to reload all the software
all over again. What a pain.

Methinks it is related to security and activation.
