I have a new Dell 8300 and i hooked up a 120gb Western Digital HD to it, started up, and no where can i find that the OS recognizes its presence. wats the dilio

Yo Jupe, that didnt help. Talk about a loop-hole. Thats the kinda crap ive been tryin to get away from. It doesnt help, cause not even disk manager shows my hard drive. its all connected, just nothing in WXP shows it.

i even tried the little ReScan Drives trick in DskMgm and its a no-go....so what do i do now "MVP"?

Evan;
Reseat the cables at both ends.
Double check the jumpers and make sure they are correct for BOTH hard
drives.
The jumpers on the original may need to be changed with addition of
another drive.
Check for proper recognition in the BIOS.

wat do u mean that the jumpers for the original need to be changed. if i tell you that my computer is a Dell 8300 Dimension with a current 250GB SATA drive, and im putting in a 120gb IDE drive are u more informed to helping me?

Evan;
Not enough.
Look on the back of the hard drives.
There is a jumper block.
All manufacturers do it differently and even different models from the
same manufacturer may be different.
You need to check the documentation of the new drive.
You also need the specs on the old drive.
You can get the specs from the drive manufacturers website.

I think what Jupiter is trying to say is to check that you have
checked the jumpers to configure the drives in a master/slave setup
(assuming that is how you have them set up).

Does your BIOS recognize the hard drives during the self test?

nada. and actually. to be quite honest i dont think i know how to do that. i think i did something like that. but again, i dunno

Evan;
I suggest you find a friend who is familiar with the insides of
computers particularly configuring multiple hard drive on a computer.
If your BIOS does not recognize the drive, either the drive is bad or
more likely the jumpers are incorrect.

Funny how i coulda probably gotten the same answer from my next door neighbor. Again, these forums prove pointless and useless. Thanks for your time

Only to those unwilling to help themselves.
Your attitude from the beginning was atrocious and I continued
anyways.
Hopefully your neighbors will help, be a little more polite to keep
from getting the door slammed in your face.

Yet another name that warrants making a 'block this user' rule.. I had a guy
being so rude to me because he had connected to the net without enabling a
firewall.. the more I tried to help, the more offensive he became.. I
reminded him that he was the one with the problem, and that my machine
worked perfectly well.. he sent me an e-mail asking if we could still be
friends, and could I give him more info.. remember the 'power outage lady
and the WP support' story?.. it was a close call..

This is really humerous to me, cause if im really such a rude guy and a waste of your precious time, why dont you stop all actin like a bunch of 30 year-old-still-livin-in-my-parents-basement immature nerds and just blow me off? but no, u insist to keep telling me that im "rude". like i give a crap of a couple of guys named "Jupiter" and "Mike" who i will never see in my life think im rude? Seriously, dont be a couple of babies and start cryin on a help forum to try and get remorse from other nerds like you, just be mature about it and dont worry about my being rude. im sorry if i hurt your feelings....i didnt know computer nerds (o...sorry, i meant MVPs) were so capable of such loud bellyaching. And the fact that you guys are sharing comupter-problem stories is even more ridiculous. To be able to relate to "Mike" must mean you religiously go through these forums and read everything.

Its a sad, sad world

I'm sorry you feel that way. It seems to me that there are people who
are honestly trying to help you with a problem. I don't see how
calling these same people names will serve any constructive purpose.

YOU are the one who asked for help. I think you will find that there
are a great number of people who are more than willing to give you
some of their time and ask nothing in return except a little common
courtesy.
