I am having a problem accessing internet/email thru a Netgear router. I have a DSL modem with 3PCs (1 each - 98, ME, XP) hooked to a router.

Everything was working fine until I tried to add antivirus SW to the XP PC.

File and print sharing continues to work fine across all 3 PCs. The 98 and ME PCs work fine accessing the IN/EM whne they are the only ones on the network. But when I add the XP machine all IN/EM capabilities cease. The XP link activity lights on the router and NIC flash constantly indicating ongoing traffic through the link. The problem is the same if I only have the XP PC hooked to the router. I can access the IN/EM from the XP if I connect directly to the DSL modem

I have removed all traces of the AV SW but the problem still persists. I think the AV software must have changed some settings or it was just coincidental

You didn't mention the brand, but some AV software packages install a
firewall as well. I'd start there.

I didn't install the firewall option and I can't find any
evidence of Firewall left over. I've used a deinstall
utility provided by the AV vendor. I've also removed
ICS/ICF from windows but still it seems like a firewall
exists. I've been at this for a week and am running out of
ideas.

ps the brand is called Freedom (I think it means Freedom
from the internet).

Has you router any kind of basic firewall if so try and
ping through it to a web IP address e.g. @ a command
prompt type'ping 194.152.64.34' ( this is a DNS server.
If you get a reply you may either need to check you have
valid DNS server settings (for Win9x type 'winipcfg' and
for NT, W2k & XP type 'IPCONFIG /ALL') try and ping the
DNS servers this gives you. If these works check ports
80, 25 & 110 are enabled if you can not ping your DNSs
change them to the one I gave you. Good luck.
