Academic simply describes the way it is sold and the licensed. XP Pro
Academic is the same OS as the retail version.

Academic license for WinXP Pro. An Academic license, however, is much
more restrictive than is a retail license.

Academic refers to license terms under which it is supplied: Only to the
recognised student concerned for his/her personal use while continuing
to be qualified as a student, and not transferable. The software is
then exactly the same
