whenever it is necessary to turn on or restart my computer, the first attempt
of xp to start freezes at the blank dark screen. When I turn the power off
then on, i get the message that windows did not shut down properly (even
though i did), and i can chose how to start windows. I always chose
"normally" and everything is fine. Why is it doing this? Just very
irritating. Thanks for your help!

Could be registry corruption. See this link for how to troubleshoot it.

Also what is the malware status of the system? Do you regularly scan
with several didn't anti-malware programs in safe mode and have a
current AV product with up to date definitions?

okay, you are getting the second message because when your first attempt to
start Windows fails and you use the power button on your tower to turn your
computer off, that is considered an improper shutdown, hence the message.
So, what your real problem is, why is your computer freezing at startup?
Could be one, or more reasons.
First, are you leaving a cd in the cd-rom drive?
Have you installed any new programs, software or hardware?
Have you run all anti virus, etc. type programs?

Here are some links to articles that may help.
