after upgrading an old system from ME to XP for a freind, whenever you rright
click on the desktop, all of the desktop icons disappear, the tool bar
disappears and all that is left is the desktop wallpaper. The standard pop up
box that allows you to change desktops settings does not appear. I have
checked to see if there is an active webpage, in the display settings using
control panel, but the isnt. then only way to get the desktop back is to
CTRL_ALT_DEL to the task manager, then FILE_RUN "explorer". Any ideas any one?

Was it an upgrade or a clean install?

Sounds like some previously software may be causing problems.

Check in Add or Remove programs in Control Panel and see if you have DivX
installed. If so, uninstall and see if it cures the issue.
