I've used Norton Utilities 2002 on my Win98SE. Upgraded to WinXP, but
some features of NU are no longer available. For instance, I've noticed
SpeedDisk does not have an option to "Optimize Swap File." Is the WinXP
defragging tool better than NU SpeedDisk?

Neither one is very good in my opinion. I recommend and use Perfect
Disk 6.0 from Raxco which can defrag the page file, directories, MFT,
and overall is much faster.

Go to www.raxco.com and download an evaluation copy.

Strongly seconded - highly recommended.

I did go to Raxco website, but am confused as what to buy because prices are
not mentioned anywhere!

Do you know what the price is for the full edition vs the "lite" (personal?)
edition ?

Thanks.

The best defragger I ever used is Diskeeper. If you have very large movie
files it will defrag those too, XP doesn't. The new 8.0 version even tests
your hard drive before and after defrag so you can see the results. Its
worth every penny

Hello Jeff:

I had no problem finding the prices. Just go to the download section
of the web page. I don't recommend buying the "lite" version. The
prices for the full version are very competitive. See below:

Single license workstation upgrade for version 6.0 = $29.56
(Electronic Download price)

Single license workstation for version 6.0 = $44.99
(Electronic Download price)

You can call them and order by phone but the prices are going to be
higher because of shipping and handling plus the cost of the media.

Regards.

The Norton one is no longer the leader that the original SpeedDisk was,
and Symantec seem to have no interest in Updating it. The ones Vaughn
refers to are all better - having tried, my own preference is for
Perfect Disk, which does a decent job of consolidating free space.

Optimising swap file is not a point to worry about too much though.
Access to it is essentially random, and there should not be much anyway
in a modern system. YOu can always achieve a defragmented one if you
really want by setting it off while you reboot and defrag, then starting
it up again.
