I have windows XP SP2 set up to synchronize automatically with
time.nist.gov. I have a cable connection. The last successful
synchronization was "1/17/2005 at 11:14 pm". The next scheduled
synchronization is "1/24/2005 at 11:14 pm".

The current time is around 12:30PM EST. The clock currently reads 3:15PM
EST. The date is correct. Update now resynchronizes successfully. This
happens about once a month. I never notice small time differences, just
2+ hours.

What could be causing this problem? I know that I can generally lose a
couple of minutes a week, but to lose two or three hours in a day is crazy.

This causes problems because some of my applications use Windows time as
a timestamp, and when I publish things the time is wrong. Plus I am
worried that it is symptomatic of larger problems.

I don't notice anything else wrong with the system.

Thanks in advance,
Luke

How old is your PC? Your internal clock runs on a battery not on system power.
That's why your clock should be up to date/time even after shutdown. If it is
over 3 years, you may need to replace the battery. Radio Shack has them for
about $5. Take the old one off the MoBo (motherboard) and take it with you
to make sure you have the right size.

Brand new motherboard... I'll try changing the battery at some point
anyway thanks.

OK... here's some more information,

This problem occurs even while the computer is left on. Does the battery
power the clock even when the system is up and running?

It is consistently fast, never slow.
