XP Crashes

I have used XP Pro for a very long time now and since the
very first day i've felt it was a safe, secure and solid
platform. I thought no other windows version was
comparable to this one, and that not even Linux (which i
used in the past) could provide me with such strength.

But a few weeks ago I woke up from that dream. All of a
sudden, my Windows XP crashed badly. Without any warning,
one morning i turned it on but it won't boot normally. It
just kept displaying:

"Windows XP could not start because the file
c:\windows\system32\config\system
is absent or corrupt"

or something alike. Anyway, I tried to fix it, and I
succeded, but this WIN XP that is recovered is not
working properly. The file associations are lost (windows
doesn't know which application opens a pdf, for instance)
and all the programs i have installed aren't shown on the
"add and remove programs" list on the control panel. This
means that i cannot uninstall any of them, so i cannot
install them as well.

I tell you, this recovered version of XP works horrible
and in the past few weeks I've been thinking on moving
to RED HAT LINUX 9.0. I've seen it working on a friend's
PC and I think that's the choice.

I'm writing so that any of you can give me a possible
solution for my XP problem, otherwise I will make the
decision towards Linux.

Thanks for your time, and for all the help you can give
me,

Pablo

I read with interest the many system crashes that people have been
experiencing. I am currently using WinXP PRo and it is incredibly
stable and fast. My experience with different versions of Windows is
that the root cause of most crashes is poor hardware/driver. Next
comes software applications. I think if you're using an IBM or Dell
machine, the chances that you'll be experiencing crashes will be
minimised. Just my 2 cents.
